Italian outlet TuttoSport have claimed that Romelu Lukaku has urged Antonio Conte and Inter Milan to raid Tottenham Hotspur for a second time in a matter of months and lure Jan Vertonghen to the Nerrazzuri.
Conte and Inter opted to sign Christian Eriksen in the January transfer window for a fee in the region of £17million, choosing to sign him for a cut-price figure – rather than waiting until the summer to land the Dane for nothing.
Vertonghen was in a similar position to Eriksen at Tottenham, with his contract set to expire in a matter of months. The former Ajax man has been linked with a number of clubs, most recently Barcelona.
But Lukaku, who continues to play alongside Vertonghen at international level with Belgium, has urged Inter to move for Vertonghen which would see the Serie A giants land the £100,000-a-week defender (Spotrac) for nothing.
TBR’s view – Should Tottenham keep Vertonghen?
In the current times, with football being suspended and the likely avenue to be to finish the 2019-20 campaign, Spurs should be looking to hand Vertonghen a very short-term contract at the very least – keeping him until the season is finished.
Beyond that, Spurs should also consider another 12 months for Vertonghen. Though he is highly paid at Spurs, Vertonghen is a top, top player with enormous experience that is happy to act as back-up under Jose Mourinho.
Players like that need to be kept.
