Real Madrid are keen on signing Arsenal defender William Saliba, according to reports in Spain.
Zinedine Zidane reportedly wants to find the new Raphael Varane. According to Defensa Central, Zidane has identified three French defenders for Real Madrid to swoop for.
Marseille starlet Boubacar Kamara and Monaco’s Benoit Badiashile are on Real’s radar. But Saliba is the other name on Zidane’s wishlist. This could be a crushing blow for Arsenal.
In the summer, Arsenal signed Saliba from Saint-Etienne but agreed to loan him back to the Ligue 1 side for the season. The 18-year-old is a regular at the back for Saint-Etienne and he looks like a real talent for the future.
Since recovering from a hamstring injury earlier this season, Saliba has played seven times for Saint-Etienne. The teenager now has 26 appearances to his name in senior football.
This has alerted Real Madrid to his potential. Zidane needs some reinforcements and he is planning to boost his defence for the long-term future. But Arsenal will be eager to hold onto the France U20 starlet.
Saliba is the future of Arsenal’s defence. By the time he arrives in North London, he would have had a whole season of Ligue 1 football under his belt and he will be raring to go.
Real Madrid’s interest provides a potential obstacle but Arsenal need to stand firm and reject this. With the leaky defence already problematic for the Gunners, Saliba could be the ideal fix.
