Real Madrid were apparently left grateful to Gareth Bale’s agent after he attempted to clarify comments made by the Tottenham Hotspur loanee this week, according to a report from Spanish outlet Defensa Central.

Bale seemed to surprise many after linking up with the Wales squad. As reported by ESPN, he claimed that he is still expecting to return to Los Blancos in the summer when asked about his future plans.

The comments were intriguing to say the least. Bale seemed to be completely out of favour before his departure. And he looked to be getting back to his old self with Spurs leading into the international break.

Some Tottenham fans may have viewed the comments as a bit of a kick in the teeth. But his agent Jonathan Barnett then told ESPN that the words had been ‘taken completely out of context’.

And it seems that Barnett’s response has gone down well with those back in Madrid. According to Defensa Central, his parent club appreciated the gesture of playing down what was said, and with that, the notion that he may return next year.

Real reportedly have no intention of bringing Bale back into the fold. In fact, the report claims that they are hopeful of agreeing a permanent exit for the 31-year-old this summer.

TBR View: Fascinating to see what Spurs’ stance will be

It remains to be seen how Tottenham feel about Bale’s future. He has certainly shown glimpses of his quality since the turn of the year.

However, it could be argued that he is yet to really prove why Spurs must look to keep him next year. He has not stepped up on the bigger stages just yet.

And even if Bale’s comments ultimately help lower Madrid’s demands this summer, Tottenham should seriously think about whether holding onto him would be worthwhile.
