Wes Foderingham is already being tracked by DC United as well as a number of English clubs as he heads into the final months of his contract at Rangers, according to a report from the Daily Mail.
Foderingham has been at Ibrox since 2015 and has spent much of that time as the club’s number one. However, Allan McGregor’s return last summer saw Foderingham drop down to the bench.
The 28-year-old made 130 appearances for the Gers across his first three seasons. However, he failed to reach double figures for the number of games he played in all competitions last term.
It was arguably a little surprising that he stayed at Rangers this summer. McGregor has been an outstanding signing, so it always looked unlikely that Foderingham would find himself in a better position this year.
And it looks as though he is going to have plenty of offers to consider in the near future. The Daily Mail reports that DC United are keen on the former Swindon Town man, as are some English sides.
The report notes that Foderingham’s contract expires next summer. He will be able to discuss a summer move with clubs outside Scotland in January.
Steven Gerrard will surely not be surprised if Foderingham does leave. He is a very good backup option to have, but it is not a role that he will want at this stage of his career.
Unfortunately for Foderingham, McGregor looks to be some way off retiring. And with Rangers fans not always convinced about Foderingham’s ability, there appears to be no guarantee that he would be his successor anyway.
It will be a shame for Rangers to lose Foderingham if he does leave. And he will be difficult to replace. But it will not come as a shock if he does decide that next summer is the right time to seek a new challenge.
