Matt Polster may be closing in on a move away from Ibrox, but the Daily Record is reporting that Rangers had been keen to keep the 27-year-old beyond this summer.

The Daily Record reports that the Gers utility man is edging closer to a £400,000 move to New England Revolution.

It is suggested that Polster is looking to move on to boost his chances of making USA’s squad for the next World Cup.

Given how Polster’s time at Rangers has played out, there may not be too many Gers fans who feel overly disappointed about his seemingly-imminent departure. But it appears that the club may not be entirely unhappy if he ultimately stays put.

The Daily Record has suggested that Rangers were hoping to keep Polster. But they do not plan to stand in his way if he would prefer to leave.

TBR View: Move looks to be best for all parties

It would be unfair to be critical of Polster’s time with Rangers. He looks set to leave having only made three starts in the Scottish Premiership.

Admittedly, it was difficult to see where he would be able to secure a regular spot in Steven Gerrard’s side. But he rarely let the team down when he did feature.

And there were glimpses of his potential. He was one of the few players to emerge with any credit after coming on in January’s defeat to Hearts.

But a move looks to be best for all parties. Polster stands a better chance of playing regularly away from Ibrox.

And Rangers look set to secure a reasonable fee for a player who could never quite establish himself in Gerrard’s plans.
