Rangers were in the race to sign Dion Sanderson on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer, but the Gers’ move for Leon Balogun brought an end to their interest, according to a report from the Daily Mail.

Steven Gerrard strengthened his defensive ranks towards the end of last month with the Light Blues announcing that they had signed Balogun, who only recently completed a spell with Wigan Athletic.

But it appears that he was not the only player on Rangers’s radar.

According to the Daily Mail, the Scottish Premiership side were one of the teams interested in signing Sanderson on loan from Wolves.

However, the Mail notes that the deal to land Balogun prompted Rangers to end their interest in the 20-year-old, who could be offered the chance to return to Cardiff City.

TBR View: Early signs suggest Rangers won’t rue Balogun deal

Sanderson looks to have an incredibly bright future ahead of him. But based on Balogun’s debut display, it would not be a surprise if Rangers did not rue the fact that they did not follow up on their interest in Sanderson.

Balogun was outstanding as the Gers beat Aberdeen 1-0 on the opening day of the new Scottish Premiership campaign.

He looked assured alongside Connor Goldson. And he certainly appears to have the potential to be a mainstay for Gerrard’s men this season.
