The Scottish Sun have claimed that Rangers want to lure Billy Gilmour back to Ibrox in January on loan, after Chelsea manager Frank Lampard suggested he could go on loan during a press conference on Monday.

Gilmour, 19, swapped Rangers for Chelsea three years ago at the tender age of 16 after impressing in the Gers youth academy. He has since broken into the senior side, and clocked up his 13th appearance for Lampard’s men on Tuesday night.

The Scotland ace starred for Chelsea as the Blues drew 1-1 with Russian side Krasnodar – in what was a dead rubber after Chelsea had already qualified. However, it was only Gilmour’s second appearance of the season for Chelsea.

Before the match, Lampard hinted he could leave ahead of January: “We have to think about what’s best,” and now, Rangers are believed to be keen. The Sun claim they are considering a loan for Gilmour until the end of the 2020-21 campaign.

TBR’s view – Gilmour is class, but do Rangers need him?

When everyone is fit, Rangers have options in central midfield. Steven Davis continues to show age is just a number, while Glen Kamara continues to impress in Europe and in Scotland. Ryan Jack has been injured, but remains a crucial part of the side.

In a more attacking sense from midfield, Rangers still boast the likes of Scott Arfield and Joe Aribo. The Gers have options in midfield but with their Europa League campaign continuing after Christmas, Steven Gerrard could need more depth.

From £48,000-a-week (Spotrac) Gilmour’s perspective, the chance to rejoin Rangers on loan in a season where they look like they could stop Celtic’s 10 in a row could be difficult to turn down. It could be a move that materialises.
