French newspaper L’Equipe have claimed that Rangers are interested in signing soon-to-be free agent Mexer from French Ligue 1 side Rennes, and Steven Gerrard has already made personal advances to get a deal done.
Mexer, 30, is a centre-back who has been a regular in Rennes’ side this season. He most recently scored a header in the Coupe De La Ligue final against PSG, which Rennes surprisingly won on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
Renowned for his power and pace at the back, Mexer has previously spent his footballing career in Portugal, turning out for Sporting Lisbon and Nacional. He has now clocked up 140 appearances for Rennes.
But the 44-time Mozambique international is set to see his contract expire even though Rennes are desperate to keep him. Gerrard is so interested in landing Mexer, that he has been spotted at a restaurant in the French city.

TBR’s view
Rangers desperately need a centre-back, and bringing a defender in with plenty of experience is vital. Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic still have plenty of years ahead of them.
Mexer boasts plenty of experience, playing in different countries and against the world’s best in PSG. He stopped Edinson Cavani, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe from winning the French Cup.
On a free, Mexer would be the perfect centre-back signing – especially with Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley set to depart.
