The Athletic have claimed that Rangers are ‘waiting in the wings’ for Sheffield United midfielder John Lundstram after the player entered the final six months of his contract at Bramall Lane – but the player wants a big contract.
Lundstram, 26, has been a key figure for Sheffield United under Chris Wilder since joining the club back in the summer of 2017. Helping the Blades get back into the Premier League, he had a hand in eight goals during 34 top-flight matches last term.
That form has seen Lundstram choose not to agree new terms, and instead look for pastures new. He has been left out by Wilder in the last three league games, failing to even make the bench. Rangers are said to be interested.
Indeed, the latest report claims they are ‘waiting in the wings’. As a non-English side, they are able to approach Lundstram on a pre-contract agreement under the Bosman ruling – which would see Lundstram agree a move for nothing, joining in the summer.
The report also claims that Lundstram wants wages in the region of a whopping £40,000 a week, for a player who is represented by the same agency as Connor Goldson and Jermain Defoe – according to TransferMarkt.
TBR’s view – Rangers need a box-to-box midfielder
Currently, the Gers boast the likes of Steven Davis, Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara, Joe Aribo, Scott Arfield and Bongani Zungu. While Aribo has returned from injury and impressed and Arfield is on fire this season, Lundstram would be a huge addition.
Davis and Jack are better at the base of the midfield, while Zungu is only on loan and Arfield is now well into his thirties. Kamara, a Finland international, continues to be linked with Premier League clubs. Lundstram would be a top addition.
