Oldham Athletic face an increasing battle to keep dominant defender George Edmundson as Rangers have now entered the race, The Daily Mail reports.
Steven Gerrard is the latest manager to take an interest in Edmundson. He wants the towering 6ft 3in centre-half to solve a problem position at Ibrox.
Rangers currently have Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic as their first-choice centre-backs. But Joe Worrall is set to return to Nottingham Forest after his loan spell and Gareth McAuley’s contract is expiring.
The Gers will need at least one new central defender in the summer. And Oldham star Edmundson has been identified as a potential target.
Edmundson will cost just £450,000, making him a bargain addition. And with just under 80 senior appearances to his name already, he has the perfect blend of youth and experience.
The 21-year-old is reportedly open to leaving Boundary Park. Oldham suffered a bottom-half finish in League Two after last season’s relegation and will struggle to keep their star man.
Edmunson is also on the radar of Sunderland. Jack Ross wants the young defender to add competition for places and he could offer Championship football if they win promotion via the play-offs.
Sunderland’s nemesis Joey Barton is also keen. Barton’s Fleetwood Town are keen to add Edmundson ahead of their League One campaign next season.
Meanwhile, Championship duo Stoke City and Hull City will rival Rangers, Sunderland and Fleetwood for the Oldham starlet.
