The Daily Mirror have reported that Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has rejected the chance to move to Newcastle United this summer in order to focus on the task in hand at Ibrox.

Gerrard, 39, had been targeted by Newcastle alongside Nice manager Patrick Vieira and Manchester City assistant boss Mikel Arteta after mightily impressing in his first season of senior management.

He took Rangers to the Europa League group stage and to second place in the Scottish Premiership, beating Celtic in the league for the first time since the Gers returned to the top flight of Scottish football.

But there is still unfinished business at Ibrox with Gerrard under pressure to win trophies and prevent Celtic from reaching the illustrious 10 in a row, eclipsing Rangers’ record of nine consecutive league wins.

Gerrard has three years remaining on his contract at Rangers, but it seems he has ignored a move to Newcastle with Rangers unimpressed by Newcastle owner Mike Ashley trying to nab their manager.

TBR’s view – Newcastle a good move for Gerrard

In the grand scheme of things, a move to one of the biggest and well-supported clubs in England would be an excellent stepping stone for Gerrard before returning to Anfield as manager.

Without Premier League experience as a manager, it remains to be seen if Liverpool would want to appoint Gerrard. Indeed, Frank Lampard has gone to Chelsea without prior top-flight experience, but Liverpool may think differently.

Newcastle, then, would have been perfect for Gerrard to impress in the Premier League and earn his stripes for the Liverpool job. But the lure of overcoming Celtic is seemingly enough for Gerrard at the moment.
