Report: Rangers lead race to sign 'fantastic' £5m striker in January

Rangers are leading the race to sign Jerry Yates, with Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men willing to pay £2 million to bring the striker to Ibrox, according to a report from The Sun on Sunday (20/11; page 64).

Yates has been a shining light for Blackpool this season. The forward has nine goals for a side who currently sit second-bottom in the Championship.

No player has found the back of the net more often in England’s second tier this term. But it would appear that he may be on the move before too long.

Rangers lead Jerry Yates race

According to The Sun on Sunday (20/11; page 64), Blackpool are ready to sell the 26-year-old in January. And it is Rangers who lead the charge for his signature.

However, there appears to be some distance between the two clubs’ respective valuations.

Michael Appleton’s men want £5 million for Yates. Rangers meanwhile, are willing to pay around £2 million for the forward. So clearly, something is going to have to give if the Gers want to bring him to Ibrox.

January is going to be a crucial month for van Bronckhorst. The Dutchman appears to be under serious pressure, with Rangers now nine points off the summit in the Scottish Premiership. And their Champions League campaign was a huge disappointment.

Antonio Colak leads the scoring charts in the Premiership. But they have managed to score more than one goal in just one of their last eight games in all competitions.

Yates is unproven at the highest level. But he has been prolific since moving to Bloomfield Road, scoring 40 times in 117 games in all competitions.

He has been a ‘fantastic‘ performer, with former boss Richie Wellens claiming that he is ‘good at everything‘.

So it will be interesting to see how hard Rangers push to sign him in January.
