Report: Rangers interested in Antoine Semenyo; £5m bid planned

Rangers are interested in bringing Antoine Semenyo to Ibrox in January, with Sports World Ghana reporting that Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men are willing to bid £5 million for the forward.

January is going to be a crucial month for van Bronckhorst and Rangers. The Dutchman is coming under real pressure, winning just one of the five games leading into their clash with Hearts on Wednesday.

Rangers are some way off the pace in the Scottish Premiership. And obviously, they exited the Champions League after a hugely disappointing group-stage campaign.

Semenyo meanwhile, is facing an uncertain future at Ashton Gate. His contract with Bristol City expires at the end of the season, according to Sports World Ghana.

Rangers would therefore, be able to discuss a pre-contract deal with the 22-year-old from the turn of the year. However, it seems that the Light Blues may be prepared to make a big bid in January.

The report claims that the Gers are willing to bid £5 million. Bristol City are ready to let him go as they are wary of losing him on a free transfer at the end of the campaign.

It would be a surprise if Rangers made a big offer for Semenyo in the winter.

He looks to be an incredibly exciting talent. He is a ‘dangerous‘ forward with an ability to play in a number of roles across the forward line.

However, offering £5 million would be quite something given that his contract is running down.

If that is what it takes to get a deal done, then perhaps Rangers will feel that it is worth the risk. And he definitely does have an extremely high ceiling.

But he is someone with 17 goals in 115 games for City in all competitions so far. So paying so much just before his contract runs down may seem like a risk to some.
