Report: Rangers in 'strong position' to beat Europa League side for 23-year-old freebie
The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell has reported that Rangers are in a ‘strong position’ to lure Danilho Doekhi to Ibrox. The defender has interest from Rangers, but also from Europa League heavyweights Napoli.
Doekhi, 23, has been excellent for Vitesse Arnhem since joining the club in the summer of 2018. Bought by Vitesse for a nominal fee, he has gone on to clock up 116 appearances for the Eredivisie side.
His form, reliability, consistency and leadership has made him captain at Vitesse. But the five-time Netherlands Under-21 star is out of contract at his current club at the end of the season – and Rangers need a defender.
While Rangers need a defender straight away, it is believed that he is only targeted on a pre-contract basis. Doekhi is quoted by the Herald as saying he is “flattered” by interest from Rangers, and Europa League side Napoli.
Doekhi to Rangers: A real coup if van Bronckhorst can get Dutch star
The mere presence of van Bronckhorst might convince Doekhi over a move, as well as the probable possibility of progressing to the Champions League group stages without the need for qualification.
On a free, he is a brilliant addition. Young, but a leader with plenty of resale value, he is the exact kind of signing Ross Wilson is renowned for making. But also, because Rangers desperately need centre-backs.
Connor Goldson and Leon Balogun are out of contract, while Niko Katic remains out on loan. Calvin Bassey has been good, while Filip Helander is somewhat injury prone. Doekhi is a great signing, for many reasons.
