Rangers are one of four clubs to have had offers for George Edmundson rejected, according to The Daily Mail. Oldham Athletic will demand more than the £450,000 transfer fee that was initially expected to be enough.
Steven Gerrard is looking for at least one new centre-back this summer. Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic is the currently preferred pairing at centre-half.
But Joe Worrall has returned to Nottingham Forest at the end of his loan. And Gareth McAuley is likely to leave the club on a free transfer.
Edmundson has been identified as one of Rangers’ top targets to replace him. His initial price tag of less than £500,000 looked like a bargain, although Rangers will have to cough up more now.
The 21-year-old has already played just under 80 senior games for the Latics, making him a relatively experienced option for someone of such a young age.
After finishing in mid-table in the fourth-tier of English football, he is ready to leave Oldham. But the League Two club will now demand more than £450,000 for their academy graduate.
Several clubs are in the hunt for Edmundson with Rangers among them. Gerrard will be hoping the lure of Ibrox and competing for silverware can convince Edmundson to join.
