The Scotsman have claimed that Rangers have taken a giant leap towards securing a move for Amiens midfielder Bongani Zungu – after they were given permission to discuss personal terms with the French club’s number eight.
Zungu, 27, has entered the final 12 months of his contract with French side Amiens. The 24-time South Africa international is expected to leave, and Rangers have been linked with a move for much of the summer window.
The previous report, as per the Scotsman, claimed that Rangers were in talks over a move to agree a fee for Zungu – with Amiens rating the holding midfielder at £3.6million. Now, they have been given permission to talk to Zungu.
Whether that means Rangers have agreed a fee remains to be seen, but it is claimed that Zungu could be given a deal that may see him stay beyond his 30th birthday. The report says the two clubs have a ‘preliminary agreement’.

TBR’s view – Zungu a good signing, but he is hardly a priority
With just a matter of days before the Scottish Premiership campaign begins with a tricky trip to Pittodrie, Rangers need a striker. Lille are reportedly in talks over a move for Alfredo Morelos, and Rangers have no back-up.
Jermain Defoe is sidelined with a hamstring injury, while Flo Kamberi has returned to Hibernian. Kemar Roofe, Josh Maja, Lyndon Dykes and others have been linked – but to no avail, so far.
Zungu is a top player. He proved it in France’s top tier last season, being one of the shining lights in a struggling Amiens side. A good addition and cheap at less than £4million – but the priority should be a striker.
