Steven Gerrard’s Glasgow Rangers are reportedly hoping to bring to Ibrox a 26-year-old midfielder who has impressed for a newly-promoted team on the continent.

According to L’Equipe, Rangers have expressed an interest in Brest ace and Algeria international Haris Belkebla.

The report claims the Ibrox side has “come forward” and “could quickly make an offer” for the player, who is also said to be on the radar of Ligue 1-bound Lens.

Belkebla, who is under contract until 2022, has had a fantastic season with Brest, who finished 14th in Ligue 1 after being promoted from the French second tier last season.

The 5ft 10in ace, who was born in France but chose to play for Algeria, has one cap for the North African country, which came in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in November.

Little is known about Belkebla on these shores, but he looks like a good player, having impressed for a newly-promoted club and helping them safely survive in the French top flight.

There are plenty of gems in other top European leagues playing for somewhat modest clubs so if this report is true, it’s good work from the Rangers scouts.

That said, he looks like a physical, defensive-minded midfielder, and with Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara and Steven Davis already on the Ibrox books, it may not be a position that needs filling.
