Report: Rangers eye 26-year-old midfielder; club ready to sell

Rangers are set to try and bring Joe Rothwell to Ibrox during the January transfer window with his club ready to cash in as his contract runs down, according to a report from The Sun.

What’s the story?

Rothwell’s future looks set to lie away from Blackburn Rovers. The midfielder is out of contract at Ewood Park at the end of the season.

Talks over a new deal are yet to reach a resolution. And that has opened the door for his admirers, with Rangers able to put themselves at the front of the queue.

The Sun notes that the Gers can discuss a pre-contract deal with the 26-year-old in the winter.

And with that, Blackburn are open to a sale in January. Rangers are planning to make an early move once the window opens.

Rangers target Rothwell destined for the highest level, according to Tony Mowbray

Rothwell is a player yet to test himself at the highest level. But he looks to have taken his game to another level this term.

He has been performing extremely well in a more disciplined central midfield role.

And according to Rovers boss Tony Mowbray, he has the quality to play in the Premier League.

“Joe is a super talent, you don’t need me to tell you that,” he said in August, as reported by Lancs Live. “I’m trying to get him coveted by the Premier League because his talent is Premier League talent.

His comments will certainly encourage Rangers fans who may not know a lot about the versatile midfielder.

Steven Gerrard’s side perhaps need further depth and quality in the middle of the park.

And Mowbray’s comments hint that landing Rothwell could be a real coup for the Scottish Premiership champions.
