The Telegraph have claimed Rangers manager Steven Gerrard could come under consideration to replace Rafa Benitez at Newcastle this summer.

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley and Benitez failed to come to an agreement in extending the Spaniard’s contract at St. James’ Park. His current deal will see him leave Newcastle on June 30.

A whole host of managers have since been linked with a move to Tyneside. Claudio Ranieri, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Sean Dyche, Gennaro Gattuso and more have all been linked with replacing Benitez.

Now, Rangers boss Gerrard could come under consideration after an excellent first season in senior management with the Scottish club. The Daily Record claim Gerrard was offered an £8million bonus to take over at Derby.

However, Gerrard has since committed his future at Rangers, but the lure of a Premier League club and the calibre of Newcastle could yet tempt the Liverpool legend – should Newcastle make a move.

TBR’s view – Gerrard is perfect for Newcastle

The 39-year-old has impressed in his first season at Rangers, taking the club to second in the Scottish Premiership and beating Celtic twice – as well as reaching the Europa League group stage.

Young, English managers are all the rave at the moment and Gerrard certainly falls into that category. But the ex-England captain has remained fiercely loyal to Rangers as of now.

Gerrard knows the Premier League like the back of his hand and would certainly attract a new calibre of player. It remains to be seen if Newcastle will move for Gerrard.
