Rangers have tried and failed to sign Manchester City starlet Phil Foden on loan, according to The Mirror. Rangers and Roma both tried to beat the deadline with a loan offer for Foden.

But Pep Guardiola will not let the England U21 starlet leave. Despite only playing for 10 minutes in the Premier League this season, Foden is still a part of Guardiola’s plans. He has been an unused substitute in each of Man City’s last three games.

Foden was seen as a Ryan Kent alternative by Steven Gerrard. Rangers have been trying to sign Kent on loan from Liverpool but the Reds want to sell him instead. Priced out of the move for Kent, Rangers switched attention to Foden.

But the Gers have failed in their attempt to sign the 19-year-old on a temporary basis. It remains to be seen whether they will look at other attacking midfield options before the deadline.

TBR’s view

Foden is a classy midfielder who can offer goals and assists. Despite his yong age, he is a part of Guardiola’s plans and already has seven goals and three assists to his name in 37 senior appearances.

It looks like Rangers will miss out on Kent, too. As seen in the Old Firm derby, Gerrard could do with one more attacking midfield option to add a creative spark. But time is running out to find one.
