Give Me Sport have claimed that Rangers are battling Everton to sign Wigan Athletic teenager James Carragher, who of course is the son of Liverpool legend Jamie ahead of the summer transfer window – and will be available on a free transfer.

Carragher, 18, left Liverpool in 2017 to join Wigan – something which his Father did not do – in order to further his career. He is yet to break into the League One side’s senior team, but has played a prominent part in the club’s FA Youth Cup run.

Able to play right-back or in the middle of the defence, Carragher is out of contract at Wigan this summer and it looks unlikely he will be given a new deal. However, there is interest in his services – with Steven Gerrard ready to take him to Rangers.

However, Rangers face competition from Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals in Everton for the youngster’s signature. Rangers will be forced to pay a compensation fee given Carragher’s age but it will be much smaller than any English clubs.

TBR’s view – Wigan youngsters increasingly impressive

Joe Gelhardt has starred since swapping Wigan for Leeds, helping the Premier League side’s Under-23 side gain promotion this season. Alfie Devine left Wigan to join Tottenham and at 16, scored on his senior debut – albeit against non-league AFC Marine.

Carragher would be another example, and would provide competition for a player that made the same move last summer in Leon Balogun – who ended his Wigan spell by joining Rangers. Carragher could be a shrewd move by Rangers or Everton.
