African website Own Goal Nigeria have claimed in an exclusive that Nigeria international Leon Balogun has agreed to join Rangers on a free transfer this summer – after his loan at Wigan Athletic expired.

Balogun, 32, joined Premier League side Brighton on a free transfer from German side Mainz in 2018 but his spell with the Seagulls proved a failure. The 31-time Nigeria international managed just 12 outings for the Seagulls.

He went on loan to cash-stricken Wigan in January, where he clocked up 11 appearances for the Latics and was a crucial part of Paul Cook’s side as they came within an inch of avoiding relegation – after a 12-point deduction.

His Brighton contract expired this summer but Balogun extended his loan spell at Wigan until the Championship campaign had been completed. Now, a free agent, the report states he has agreed a deal to move to Rangers.

It sees Balogun link up with Nigeria teammate Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey, who has also stated his intent to play for the African country. The German-born defender’s signing will be announced in the coming days.

TBR’s view – Balogun good cover at centre-back for Rangers

Though he has struggled in the Premier League, the centre-back has impressed in the Bundesliga – clocking up 75 appearances in Germany’s top tier. On a free transfer, he is excellent cover for Rangers.

With Niko Katic suffering a long-term injury, Balogun adds to Gerrard’s options along with Connor Goldson, George Edmondson and Filip Helander. Though unlikely to be first choice, he adds experience and solid cover.
