Former Newcastle United manager and Toon Army favourite, Rafa Benitez, could be set for a return to Napoli, according to reports in Italy.
Corriere dello Sport claims that Benitez is one of a number of managers in the running to take over in Naples. Gennaro Gattuso is under pressure from president Aurelio De Laurentis, and it is claimed Benitez is among the names being considered.
The news will resonate in Newcastle given the club’s supporters’ infatuation with the Spanish coach. Unlike Steve Bruce, it seems, Benitez is highly-regarded by the Toon Army.
Benitez left his role in China last week and since then, there have been rumours and call from some in Newcastle to see the former Liverpool manager return to St James’ Park.
However, news of a proposed return to Napoli will put an end to any speculation. Steve Bruce, then, looks like getting a reprieve for now at least after another loss last night to Leeds United.
TBR View: No hiding from it, Newcastle fans will be a bit gutted here
Everyone in football can see that Newcastle fans love Benitez. It is not a criticism of current boss Bruce from us, but it is clear that the Toon Army would more than welcome Rafa back.
A move to Napoli would be a blow for some in the Northeast. However, it could give Bruce a bit of a lift and give him the chance to prove he is actually the man for the job.
Performances must improve, of course. But without the potential of Benitez replacing him looming, he might be able to just crack on and turn things around.
