Report: 'Quality' striker wants to join Newcastle now, he could follow Wood to St. James' Park
Newcastle United are reportedly set to make Chris Wood their second signing of the January transfer window.
The Magpies are in need of bolstering their ranks, particularly up front in wake of Callum Wilson’s injury.
Even if Wood joins, there’s certainly room for Newcastle to bring in one more.
And according to the Daily Mail, the Magpies are continuing talks over Hugo Ekitike.
The outlet claims Newcastle value the Reims forward at £20million, while his parent club wants £25million.
In addition, Ekitike is reportedly interested in the Magpies project under the new owners and open to a move to St James’ Park.
Newcastle appear to have competition for the 19-year-old as well.
As well as the Magpies, the likes of Tottenham, Brighton and Brentford are reportedly eyeing Ekitike.
The 6ft 2in talent is widely recognised as one of the best young players in European football at the moment.
Ekitike has scored eight goals and supplied three assists in just 900 minutes of football this season.
“There is something very special about him,” Reims coach Oscar Garcia told the Ligue 1 media team.
“He’s young, and he has the quality to become a very good player.
“He’s started a lot of games now, he’s a young man with a lot of quality but also a lot to improve on, but he works hard in training.”
Admittedly, he would be a bit of a gamble for Newcastle at this moment in time.
Ekitike is an incredibly talented prospect, but he’d have to hit the ground running in a tense, high-stakes environment.
That said, with Eddie Howe in charge and Wood as his strike partner – both experienced relegation battlers – he’d have the right support.
