Newcastle and Liverpool have been handed a huge boost in the hunt for Kalidou Koulibaly, with PSG now reportedly out of the running to sign him.

According to fresh reports from Le10 Sport, the Paris club will instead prioritise Thiago Silva’s new contract.

That decision from PSG means they won’t pursue a deal for Koulibaly, who is being heavily linked with a move away from Napoli this summer once again.

Along with Newcastle and Liverpool, Manchester United are also keen on Koulibaly. The Red Devils were tracking the big defender last summer and their interest is apparently still rife.

However, recent reports have claimed Newcastle want to land Koulibaly as they aim to make a splash in the market under their new ownership.

Indeed, the Express claimed that Napoli value Koulibaly at around the £80m mark and that the player himself could be open to a move to the northeast.

PSG dropping out, then, only further enhances the prospects of Newcastle making their mark.

What a moment this could be in the race to land Koulibaly. We have become so accustomed to teams like PSG coming along that this leaves a huge gap for Newcastle to exploit.

It’s clear that the Napoli man is going to move eventually. It’s also clear that he is a huge talent. A player does not simply warrant the level of interest that Koulibaly has without being a quality operator.

And with PSG moving out of the way, Newcastle now have to strike. Liverpool remains keen but this is the sort of deal Newcastle needs if they want to show how serious they are.

Yes, it’s big money at £80m. But the top players don’t come cheap. In addition, what better way for the new owners to show the Premier League they mean business.
