Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton appear to have reason to follow the conclusion of the Serie A season very closely, with La Gazzetta dello Sport suggesting that the Premier League trio are all interested in Manchester United defender Chris Smalling.

Smalling has enjoyed a much better season. The centre-back had been struggling for a while before sealing a loan move to Roma ahead of this campaign.

The 30-year-old has made 21 league appearances for the Giallorossi, scoring twice. And his form has not gone unnoticed back in the Premier League.

La Gazzetta dello Sport has suggested that the Gunners, Toffees and Spurs all want Smalling this summer.

Unsurprisingly, the report notes that Roma would like to keep Smalling. And given the year that he has enjoyed, you could understand if he was keen to stay in the Italian capital.

But it appears that Roma’s form in the remaining weeks of the season could have big implications for Smalling’s future.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Roma will find it easier to sign Smalling if they qualify for the Champions League. But missing out would reportedly complicate matters.

That is particularly intriguing given their current position in the table. Roma are fifth and three points adrift of Atalanta in the last remaining Champions League spot.

They have also played a game more than the side above. So they have plenty of work to do.

The report would therefore hint that the door could be open for the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Everton.

But, much like the situation surrounding the resumption of the season, Smalling’s future could remain up in the air for some time.
