Report: Premier League club think they can sign 'phenomenal' Leeds player for £45m, been in talks for months
Manchester City think that they can get a deal done to sign Kalvin Phillips from Leeds United for £45 million.
Phillips has been away on international duty with England but talks over his future look set to accelerate now that the Nations League fixtures for June have ended.
The midfielder endured a wretched night as the Three Lions were thumped 4-0 at home by Hungary at Molineux, fielded as the sole holding midfielder.
The Athletic report that City have been in talks over signing Phillips for months and they are expected to move forward now that his summer break has started.
Manchester City think they can get Phillips for £45 million
Their report claims that City think a deal can be done for £45 million, and at the top end £50 million during the summer window.
Leeds can hold out for a higher asking price now that they have secured Premier League safety.
The report says that Phillips had a relegation release clause, and while it is not outlined what that figure is, it can be assumed it would be a fair amount less than £45 million.
£45 million would be a lot of money for Leeds to go into the market to replace Phillips with, but it does perhaps feel a touch on the low side for a player of his importance and quality.
Phillips has been described as ‘phenomenal‘ by former Leeds man Jermaine Beckford and his departure would be a huge blow for Jesse Marsch.
But if he is going to make his big move, now is the time, before he signs a new deal at the age of 27, and while Leeds can still get a big fee for him.
City are slick in the transfer market and they can offer Phillips a wage rise and the prospect of fighting for the biggest trophies on a regular basis.
