Report plays down Aston Villa interest in Mbaye Diagne, ‘unknown’ and ‘better’ striker option possible on deadline day

Aston Villa are expected to continue their summer spending tomorrow as they hunt for another new striker. Scott Hogan’s loan switch to Stoke City leaves Dean Smith’s men looking a little short in attack, despite the arrival of Wesley Moraes from Club Brugges.

One name that has been mentioned as a possible recruit is Mbaye Diagne. As reported by Aksam recently, Dean Smith’s side were said to be considering an £11 million move for the player.

Yesterday, Turkish source Sabah claimed that Aston Villa had made a £9.2 million bid for the player, but that Galatasaray are hopeful of a deal in the region of £12 million.

Considering Diagne scored 31 goals in 36 games last season, Aston Villa fans were rightly a little excited.

However, the Birmingham Mail appears to have poured cold water on the deal. They claim that reports linking Diagne with a move to Villa have been ‘played down’.

The same report suggests that RB Leipzig striker Jean-Kevin Augustin is a far more likely recruit. However, the club is reportedly ‘actively looking’ at ‘unknown’ and ‘better’ striker options.

It seems that Aston Villa might have a surprise up their sleeve when it comes to bringing in a striker on deadline day.

But it seems Diagne will not be that man.
