According to The Athletic, Steve Bruce has now decided to release Andy Carroll at West Brom, just months after he was also released by Newcastle.

What’s the story?

Well, the 33-year-old has endured a difficult year, to say the least.

Carroll didn’t do enough under Bruce to earn a longer contract at Newcastle, after scoring just one Premier League goal in 18 appearances last season.

The England international then signed for Reading, before Valerien Ismael lured him to the Hawthorns following an injury to January signing Daryl Dike.

Carroll has actually done well at West Brom, scoring three goals in his last eight Championship outings, although Bruce – who was hired to replace Ismael – has now decided to let him go.

In our view, that decision is a bit harsh.

The Athletic believe the 61-year-old is keen to take the Baggies in a different direction, as Bruce and his coaches feel Carroll dictates the style of play with his aerial presence.

The Athletic state that the striker has become a fan favourite at West Brom, so this decision might not sit well with supporters.

Andy Carroll hard done by after Newcastle exit

It was clear that Carroll could no longer perform in the Premier League, although he remains a useful Championship player as his efforts for West Brom prove.

Of course, the Gateshead-born striker hasn’t exactly set the Hawthorns alight, and we do understand Bruce wanting to take a different approach, but we see no reason why Carroll can’t be kept as a Plan B option from the bench.

In the dying stages of a game, his aerial ability, strength and finishing skills would certainly come in handy.

Sadly, Bruce doesn’t see it that way, and is set to release the towering frontman for the second time in just under a year.

Hopefully, Carroll can find a new home before pre-season begins.
