Kalvin Phillips is understood to be closing in on a comeback for Leeds United despite Marcelo Bielsa suggesting that previous assessments that he would be back for early March may be too optimistic, according to a report from The Athletic.

Leeds begin a new era today. Today is the first day since June 14th 2018 where Bielsa has not been the head coach at Elland Road. And obviously, Jesse Marsch is looking set to be announced as his successor.

For many, Marsch’s success in the short-term may well depend on how quickly he is able to call upon Liam Cooper, Patrick Bamford and Phillips.

Bielsa issued a worrying update on the trio ahead of what proved to be his final game in charge at the weekend. He suggested that Leeds’ hopes of having the injured trio back for early March may ultimately be wide of the mark.

However, Marsch may be set for an early boost upon his expected arrival. The Athletic reports that Phillips is understood to be close to a comeback – despite Bielsa’s claim.

Leeds fans will be fascinated to see how Phillips fares under Marsch

No player was more important to Bielsa’s system at Elland Road than Phillips.

Bielsa started working with the academy graduate when he was struggling to break into the Leeds team. At the time, Ronaldo Vieira was the young midfielder the club’s fanbase were incredibly excited about.

And yet, Bielsa turned Phillips into one of the Premier League’s finest holding midfielders. He also gave Phillips the platform to become England’s player of the year in a year they reached a major final.

How Marsch uses him upon his return will be fascinating to see. Marsch has tended to use a slightly different system. And with that, Phillips’ role may change slightly.

Having said that, Leeds should be stronger with Phillips available, no matter where he plays. So there is absolutely no doubt that his return coming soon will provide a massive lift.
