Report: 'Outstanding' Leeds player set to join Raphinha and start contract talks
Leeds United are planning to open contract talks with Adam Forshaw, with the Daily Mirror reporting that Marcelo Bielsa wants him to remain at Elland Road beyond the end of the season.
For a long time, it appeared inevitable that Forshaw would depart in the summer. His contract expires in the coming months. And he went into this season having gone almost two years without a league appearance.
He had been playing the best football of his spell in the weeks before he was sidelined. But Leeds had since sealed promotion. And given how long he had been out, it seemed inevitable that he would not be at the standard to make an impact.
However, all those who doubted Forshaw have been forced to eat the biggest slice of humble pie since his return for Leeds.
Forshaw has been outrageously good. He has looked like he has barely been away and he has been playing in the Premier League for the large majority of his career.
He even produced a performance on Sunday that suggested that he could make Kalvin Phillips’ absence a lot easier for Leeds to deal with. Tony Dorigo told the Yorkshire Evening Post that he was ‘outstanding’ against Burnley at the weekend.
It is probably not a surprise therefore, that Leeds plan to discuss a new contract for Forshaw. It is suggested by the Daily Mirror that Bielsa wants him to be a part of the squad next term.
Adam Forshaw a contender for Leeds’ Player of the Season after amazing return
Raphinha has been Leeds’ most impressive player in the first-half of the season. He is, by some way, the club’s top goalscorer. And the Whites have often looked a lot less threatening when the Brazilian is unavailable.
But Forshaw is threatening to give him a run for his money. It is hard to explain just how significant his return has been.
And if his form continues, Raphinha may have to step up once again to see off his rival.
