Report: Orta compiles three-man shortlist to replace Kiko Casilla, including Spanish talent and Newcastle stopper
The Yorkshire Evening Post claims that Victor Orta has three goalkeepers in mind to replace Kiko Casilla. The veteran Spaniard left Leeds on a loan-to-buy deal, joining La Liga side Elche. Orta is considering moves for Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, and two others this summer.
Woodman, 24, remains on the books at Newcastle but has entered the final two years of his Toon contract. He has spent the last two seasons on loan at Swansea City, where he has kept an impressive 34 clean sheets in 95 appearances. That form has caught the eye of Orta and Leeds.
But he is not the only goalkeeper on the Leeds shortlist to replace Casilla. Levante’s second-choice stopper Dani Cardenas, 24, is an option after impressing in his side’s route to the Copa Del Rey semi-final. Norwegian club Valerenga’s Kristoffer Klaesson, 20, is also said to be an option.
Newcastle ace Woodman a top signing for Leeds, but surely he rejects a move?
Woodman showed last season that he is clearly good enough to start in the Premier League. 22 of his 34 clean sheets in Swansea colours came about during 2020-21. In 52 games in total, he conceded just 47 – helping Swansea reach the play-offs. He could be quite pricey, too.
The Chronicle claim Newcastle rate Woodman at £10million. Is it worth spending so much on a second-choice goalkeeper? Would he be happy to be second choice. The probable answers to those questions are no.
