One year after Tottenham Hotspur sold Juan Foyth, Marca is reporting that Villarreal are demanding a fee of over £35 million for the defender amid interest from Barcelona this summer.

Foyth left Spurs last summer after spending a year on loan with the Yellow Submarine. The Argentinian helped Unai Emery’s side win the Europa League in 2021. And they followed that with a run to the semi-final of the Champions League last season.

His form has not gone unnoticed. Marca reports that Barcelona now want the 24-year-old. They have already met with his representatives.

Villarreal however, are digging their heels in when it comes to Foyth’s asking price. Marca notes that his contract includes a £35 million release clause. And the club will not consider selling him for a lower fee.

Of course, that represents a superb piece of business for Villarreal. As Marca reports, Tottenham received a fee of £12.6 million when Foyth left North London permanently.

Foyth was always an intriguing player while he was at Tottenham. There seemed to be extremely high hopes for the defender when he arrived. And he did show glimpses of his potential.

Spurs never saw the best of Foyth however. So you could understand why the club felt willing to agree a loan deal that could become a permanent move further down the line.

Given the success he has had at El Madrigal, plenty of Tottenham supporters have probably wondered whether they made the right call to let him go.

It does not appear that Spurs are missing Foyth right now. They have kicked on under Antonio Conte. And they now boast some world-class defenders.

But Barcelona’s interest and Villarreal demanding £35 million highlights why Tottenham signed him in the first place.
