Report: Ollie Watkins considered by Tottenham, hefty price tag likely to deter club

A report by Football London has suggested that Tottenham have looked at Brentford striker Ollie Watkins as someone who could bolster their homegrown quota.

It does, however, suggest that Tottenham aren’t keen on getting involved in an auction for a new striker and could be put off by Watkins’ valuation.

The Telegraph has claimed that the Brentford hitman could be valued at around £28 million and surely Spurs won’t pay that for a player who will ultimately act as competition for Harry Kane.

Aston Villa are the club linked heavily with a move to sign the ex-Exeter man, with Dean Smith having worked with him during his time at Griffin Park.

Jose Mourinho will be desperate to avoid a repeat of last season when injuries to Kane and Son Heung-min completely decimated his attack.

Signing a backup striker looks like a formality, although given the Football London report, it seems unlikely it will be Watkins rocking up at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The lively talisman is also capable of playing on the flank but last season he excelled in a role as Brentford’s central striker.

Watkins, 24, fired in 26 goals as the Bees were denied promotion to the Premier League by Fulham who beat them in the Play-Off Final.

Watkins won’t get that in a hurry at Tottenham and unless Kane is injured or suspended he’d probably find himself on the bench under Mourinho.

Villa would allow him more chances to play and although Tottenham are likely to finish higher up the Premier League, Watkins will probably want to continue his development by playing and scoring goals.
