Tottenham Hotspur’s momentum was dealt a setback at the weekend as Jose Mourinho’s side lost Toby Alderweireld during their victory over Manchester City.
Mourinho claimed after the win that the Belgian’s groin injury looked bad (via Football London). And that may have left some supporters wondering whether he could be out for some time.
Losing Alderweireld – who, remarkably, cost just £11.4 million (via Guardian) – for a significant period would be a huge blow. The centre-back has been outstanding alongside Eric Dier in recent weeks.
And it does appear that he will not make a swift return. According to the London Evening Standard, he will definitely miss both of their games this week. And it is claimed that Spurs are still preparing to be without him for some time after scans proved inconclusive.
However, the London Evening Standard adds that there is optimism that the problem is not as bad as first feared.
TBR View: Alderweireld returning sooner than initially expected could be huge boost for Tottenham
Admittedly, the report is likely to elicit bittersweet emotions for plenty of Spurs fans. It is still a worry that he could be out for a significant period.
However, it is good news that the problem may not be as bad as first feared.
Based on the way Alderweireld and Dier were playing together in recent weeks, the sooner he is back, the better for Tottenham.
