French website Le10Sport have claimed that Newcastle United’s prospective new owners are ‘very close’ to securing their first arrival of the summer – in the form of manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Pochettino, 48, has been out of work since being sacked by Tottenham last year and replaced by Jose Mourinho. The Argentine boss has been heavily linked with the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid and other big European sides.

However, since reports of a takeover edging close, Newcastle have been strongly linked with the former Espanyol and Southampton gaffer. Rafa Benitez, Max Allegri, Jorge Jesus, Luciano Spalletti, Andre Villas-Boas and Lucien Favre have also been linked.

But the latest report looks conclusive. Although it states talks have been held over a move to bring Benitez back, Le10Sport’s sources have confirmed that Pochettino is ‘very close’ to replacing Steve Bruce – and that talks are at an ‘advanced stage’.

TBR’s view – Could Newcastle really land Pochettino?

For Pochettino, it depends how long he is to wait for a big European job – or if he wants to get back into action sooner rather than later. If he wants a big job, he will have to wait. None of Europe’s heavyweights look as though they need a new manager.

So, Pochettino will have to wait or take on the exciting project that is Newcastle. With plenty of money to spend despite the global health crisis, Pochettino can be the figurehead of Newcastle looking to replicate Manchester City’s success.

It looks as if, as per the last report, that he may have chose to return to football now.
