Dwight Gayle is eyeing a return to Crystal Palace when his Newcastle United contract expires in the summer, according to a report from The Sun on Sunday (10/1; page 58).
Gayle has only made a handful of substitute appearances for the Magpies since returning from injury. But he did score the winning goal in the 2-1 victory over West Brom last month.
It appears that his days with the Magpies may be numbered. The Sun on Sunday (10/1; page 58) reports that his £75,000-a-week contract expires in the summer.
It remains to be seen if Newcastle have any interest in extending his terms. But the report claims that the 31-year-old is keen to rejoin Palace if offered the chance.
The Sun on Sunday adds that the Eagles are set to oversee a number of their changes to their squad at the end of the season, so there may be scope for the club to target Gayle.
Gayle has been a decent performer at the highest level. However, there is no question that his record is nowhere near as impressive as when he has been in the Championship.
That is also down to game-time. He made just 10 starts in the top flight last season, with a further 10 appearances coming from the bench.
That suggests that he could be a smart signing on a free transfer, whether that be to Palace or another Premier League side.
But Newcastle may perhaps still welcome the chance to let him go. Paying £75,000-a-week on a player who is yet to start a game this season is not ideal if they are having to work with a tight budget.
