Newcastle United are set to send highly-rated youngster Kelland Watts out on loan. According to The Mail’s live deadline day blog (12:31), Watts will join Stevenage on loan for the season.
Watts has been involved in pre-season training with the first-team this summer. And he was on the bench for Newcastle’s win over Fulham on the final day of the 2018/19 Premier League season.
But he is yet to make his first-team debut and Steve Bruce feels he needs a loan move. The towering central defender will now test himself in the senior arena after playing 29 games for the U23 team last season.
Watts is on his way down south to team up with Stevenage ahead of this potential move. The 19-year-old will join a potential promotion push at Broadhall Way after the club finished 10th last season.
Stevenage lost their opening game of the season last weekend. They fell to a 2-0 defeat to newly-promoted Salford City in a televised encounter. But Watts could be eligible to make his debut in this weekend’s home clash with Exeter City if the paperwork is completed on time.
It will be the teenager’s first taste of senior action as he has only been involved in a matchday squad up until now. Newcastle will run the rule over his progress ahead of summer 2020.
