Newcastle United winger Callum Roberts is close to joining Greek side Panathinaikos, according to SDNA. Roberts is out of contract this summer and will leave on a free transfer.

The 22-year-old will not be offered fresh terms by the Magpies and looks set to leave with just two first-team appearances to his name.

Roberts played one first-team game this season, scoring in the FA Cup win over Blackburn Rovers. In January, Roberts joined Colchester United on loan but that was unsuccessful.

Newcastle recalled their young winger after he made just three substitute appearances for the Essex-based side.

Roberts is now set to leave Newcastle. He joined the club aged eight but will have to end his 14-year stay at St James’ Park.

Panathinaikos looks like it will be Roberts’ new home. The ex-England U20 starlet has been identified by a former Newcastle player.

Nikos Dabizas, who spent five years as a defender on Tyneside, is the Sporting Director at Panathinaikos. He is ready to raid his former club for Roberts.

Panathinaikos were not long ago known as one of the heavyweights in Greek football. But after an 8th place finish in 2018/19, things need to improve.

Dabizas will be hoping that soon-to-be free agent Roberts can add some much needed quality to Panathinaikos’ ranks when he completes his Newcastle exit.
