Report: Newcastle, West Ham and Mourinho vying for Villarreal's Gerard Moreno

Gerard Moreno has enjoyed a beautiful 2020-21 campaign. Not only has he scored a whopping 30 goals in all competitions, but he has been included in Spain’s Euro 2020 squad – and helped Villarreal win the Europa League. Now, clubs are interested – namely, Newcastle, West Ham and AS Roma.

Moreno, 29, scored his 30th goal of the season during the Europa League final. A 1-1 draw against Manchester United – one of new Roma manager Jose Mourinho’s old clubs – that went to penalties. Scoring his, Villarreal eventually won when David De Gea missed his kick from 12 yards.

Ending the season on 30 goals and 11 assists, he has got himself into the Spain squad and could start. But he has also attracted interest from Premier League clubs West Ham and Newcastle. The latter would be a somewhat surprising move, given Newcastle’s lack of European football.

West Ham are in the Europa League but with Villarreal winning the competition, they will be in next season’s Champions League. Mourinho also wants him at Roma. That is according to a report from CalcioMercato. West Ham are said to be after a striker, with Adam Hlozek also linked.

Best XI Left Out Of Euro 2020 Squads

Moreno would be a stunning signing for Newcastle or West Ham

But Moreno has never left his home country and the chances of getting him out of Spain now, are almost zero. Having spearheaded Unai Emery’s pursuit of Champions League football – he will now be taking the Yellow Submarine into the group stages. Is he really going to throw that away?

Surely not. Having worked so hard, performed so well, he has been afforded fan-favourite status since his move from Espanyol. He needs to stay and enjoy it while it lasts, rather than risk it all and move to England or Italy. That can come later.
