Newcastle United made an enquiry about signing forward Anthony Gordon from Everton in July but saw it rebuffed.
The Athletic report that is far as their interest in the Englishman went as they were willing to pay £35 million and no more.
Everton chief Kevin Thelwell said they would not sell at that price and of course then Tottenham and Chelsea came into the picture.
So Newcastle were surprised when links with Gordon hit the press ten days later, by which time they had moved onto other targets.

Newcastle asked about Gordon
Newcastle looked around for a winger throughout the summer transfer window but did not manage to get one through the door.
The likes of Christian Pulisic were linked on loan but Eddie Howe told his pre-match press conference before facing Crystal Palace he prefers a permanent deal.
Perhaps Everton were trying to use reported Newcastle interest in Gordon to boost up the price for the winger, with Chelsea reportedly close.
Gordon was described as “really special” by former West Ham United striker Dean Ashton on talkSPORT last season.
He said: “I think he could be special. Really special. Personally, I think Anthony Gordon would be a superb signing for Newcastle.
“Whenever I have seen him, his delivery from wide areas. His workrate. I think he could be a special player.
