Report: Newcastle want West Brom star, but Tottenham are still pushing hard

CalcioMercato claim Newcastle have joined the race to sign West Brom ace Sam Johnstone – but Tottenham remain intent on nabbing his signature.

Johnstone, 28, remains out of contract in June. It remains to be seen if West Brom will sell him in January for a cut-price figure, or let him go on a free.

The goalkeeper is at the top of his game at the moment, despite relegation to the Championship. He was part of England’s Euro 2020 squad last summer.

The ex-Manchester United man has three England caps to his name. In 19 games this term, he has conceded just 14 – keeping nine clean sheets.

Newcastle want a goalkeeper, despite having Martin Dubravka, Karl Darlow and Freddie Woodman. Lazio’s Thomas Strakosha has been linked.

But CM say that Newcastle also want Johnstone. Last week, the Mail reported that Tottenham are set to make a bid themselves.

Newcastle eye Johnstone: Toon or Tottenham for England man?

Do Newcastle really need a goalkeeper? One would argue of the players they have that could remain post-takeover, is Dubravka.

He has been linked with Juventus and Chelsea during his time at Newcastle and is one of the club’s best. Johnstone is no improvement on him.

Indeed, Johnstone’s best move would certainly be to Tottenham. Hugo Lloris is out of contract in June, and Pierluigi Gollini is only on loan.

The Italian is struggling to show why he deserves to earn a permanent move. Johnstone should join Spurs over Newcastle, if he has the choice.

TransferMarkt say Johnstone is represented by the same agency that looks after Toon striker Callum Wilson – who captained Newcastle on Tuesday.
