Newcastle United will reportedly reignite a push to sign Schalke 04 midfielder, Weston McKennie, this summer, as Southampton also remain firmly in the hunt.

According to the Daily Mail, Steve Bruce is willing to go all out to try and sign the USA star, who has already racked up 19 caps for his country.

The interest from Newcastle comes a month down the line from when Bild first claimed that the Magpies were keeping an eye on McKennie. Along with Everton, it was claimed at the time that any move would cost either club around £22m.

But with nothing materialising back then, Southampton has now picked up the baton it seems, with the Times claiming the Saints were keen on landing the Schalke ace as a replacement for Pierre Hojberg.

However, it is now claimed that Newcastle are back in the race. Furthermore, it is believed Steve Bruce could be willing to spend £20m on the midfielder, which would wipe out a big chunk of his summer budget.

Young, full of energy, and already proven in the German league, it’s little wonder that so many teams are looking at McKennie.

He’d be a good signing in the northeast, too. His all-action style would complement the more relaxed and composed game of Jonjo Shelvey, which would allow the England man to do the business you would think.

McKennie has a massive future ahead of him and would suit the Premier League. Whoever gets him will be getting a fine young player and Newcastle fans will hope they can be the ones to win the race.
