Newcastle are looking at making Burnley defender, James Tarkowski, their first big signing in January, according to a report from The Telegraph today.
It’s claimed that Tarkowski is the man Newcastle and their new owners have identified to be one of – if not the – first signings of the new Saudi-led era at St James’ Park.

Tarkowski has long been one of the standout players outside of those clubs regularly challenging for Europe. Indeed, it was only in the summer of 2020 that Leicester tried to pay £30m for him, although Burnley were said to value their man at close to the £50m mark.

Unfortunately for Burnley, they won’t be getting anywhere near that amount now. Tarkowski is out of contract in the summer, meaning a cheaper deal will be on the cards.
Sean Dyche has previously insisted he has no problem with the defender. In fact, he even said he was a ‘top player’ with a perfect attitude. However, Dyche must surely realise his star man will be off soon.
After already winning two caps for England, Tarkowski will hope a move to St James’ Park could give him a chance of being in the thoughts of Gareth Southgate for Qatar.
TBR’s View: Tarkowski an ideal signing for Newcastle at this stage
Experienced? Check. Knows the Premier League? Check. Not overly expensive and with room to improve further? Check. Put simply, Tarkowski is ideal for Newcastle at centre-half.
He’ll slot seamlessly into proceedings and has experience and knowhow already in the tank to make an instant impression.
Alongside Jesse Lingard, who the Telegraph also claims is of interest, Tarkowski would be an ideal initial signing in the new era.
