Newcastle United have reportedly rekindled their interest in Rennes left-back Faitout Maouassa, according to L’Equipe.

However, the Magpies could be set for competition from Premier League rivals Manchester United for the 21-year-old’s signature.

Maouassa has enjoyed a fruitful season with the Ligue 1 club, making 32 appearances in all competitions and registering three goals and two assists.

His exploits helped Rennes up to third in the French top flight prior to the football suspension.

Newcastle reportedly bid £7million for Maouassa a year ago, according L’Equipe, and the same outlet now claims the Magpies are hoping to make a new approach in the summer.

According to The Sun, the 5ft 7in ace is currently valued at £10million, and with his contract expiring in 2021, Rennes could potentially be tempted to cash in if they can’t get him to pen a new deal.

TBR View:

Maouassa is a talented young player with plenty of strengths including pace, superb reading of the game, sharpness and versatility, being able to also play on the left side of midfield.

He has come a long way since Newcastle were first linked with him and, with a takeover on the horizon, they could soon have a sizeable warchest with which they can tempt Rennes with a big bid and the player with a hefty salary offer.
