Report: Newcastle want teenage striker Bayern Munich are monitoring

Newcastle United are one of the sides interested in signing West Bromwich Albion starlet Reyes Cleary, with the Daily Mail reporting that Bayern Munich are also keen on the 17-year-old.

Cleary looks to be the latest sensation to emerge from the Baggies’ academy in recent years.

He has scored 14 goals in just 12 games so far this season. Unsurprisingly, the Championship promotion-chasers want to keep him at the Hawthorns.

The Daily Mail reports that West Brom want to sign him to his first professional contract. But their hopes of doing so are not being helped by the levels of interest in him.

The Mail notes that Bayern are planning scouting trips having already looked at the teenager.

Meanwhile, Newcastle, Crystal Palace and Borussia Dortmund are amongst his other admirers. Both Schalke and Hoffenheim also want to take him to Germany.

Cleary signing would be a statement from Newcastle

One of the areas Newcastle must improve under their new owners is the quality of the youngsters coming through on Tyneside.

Unfortunately, the Longstaff brothers have been the anomalies in recent years. Freddie Woodman is another rare success story, it seems.

Meanwhile, bright prospects such as Elias Sorensen and Rolando Aarons have moved on having failed to live up to initial expectations.

Signing Cleary therefore, would be a real statement from those who have taken over at St James’ Park.

It would highlight that they are not only focused on the current first-team.

And the signing would be all the more impressive with the likes of Bayern and Dortmund also sniffing around the striker.
