The Daily Star have claimed Newcastle United want to sign Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn this summer if the Midlands club are relegated – and form a reunion with manager Steve Bruce, who lured McGinn to Villa Park in 2018.

Villa convinced McGinn to ignore the clutches of Celtic and instead move south from Hibernian to Villa Park, for a bargain £2million. The 25-year-old has since gone on to shine for Villa, until a long-term injury halted his progress this season.

The Scotland international’s absence has been felt by Villa, with McGinn now missing for the club’s last 10 Premier League games. It remains to be seen if he will be fit to help Villa in their fight against the drop.

Bruce signed McGinn for Villa in the summer of 2018, and has since been quoted by the Irish Independent as saying that: “He has to be one of my best ever signings because he has a determination to do well.”

The report claims that Newcastle will look to land McGinn in the summer, if Villa do suffer relegation. A fee of £30million is being touted to take McGinn to the north east, and much closer to home. His contract expires in 2024.

TBR’s view – £30m for McGinn would be stunning business

Now he has proven himself in both the Championship and Premier League, McGinn is only going to get better over the next four or five seasons as he gains more experience at the top level. What is paramount, is remaining in the Premier League.

Villa are more than likely to go down as they remain in 19th place. Newcastle do have money to spend with owner Mike Ashley seemingly more willing to open the coffers for Bruce, than he did for Rafa Benitez.

Newcastle need a midfielder this summer, and McGinn is the ideal signing.
