Report: Newcastle want Preston defender Ben Davies

The Sun have claimed that Steve Bruce wants to bring Preston North End centre-back Ben Davies to St. James’ Park this summer, after being impressed with the defender during his time in charge of Sheffield Wednesday.

The 23-year-old defender has starred for Preston over the last two seasons, clocking up 88 appearances in total since breaking through the academy. Last term, Davies managed 40 appearances in all competitions.

He impressed and even captained Preston on one occasion, helping his side beat Birmingham City 1-0. Still very much at the start of his career, Davies is one of the Championship’s best up-and-coming defenders.

It is believed that Bruce is an admirer of Davies after having watched him play against his Sheffield Wednesday side last season, and indeed other Championship sides. He has two years left on his Preston contract.

Davies is left-footed and more than adept at playing on the left side of defence, too. It remains to be seen how much Preston would charge for Davies’ signature this summer.

TBR’s view – Schar and Fernandez to leave Newcastle?

The reported interest in Davies suggests Newcastle are looking to bring in a new central defender. That is, despite the presence of Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar, Florian Lejeune, Ciaran Clark and Federico Fernandez.

Newcastle have an abundance of centre-backs and plenty even if Bruce continues to use a three-man central defence that Rafa Benitez adopted towards the end of his tenure.

Bringing another one in, in Davies, suggests there could be exits. Both Schar and Fernandez have been linked with moves to AC Milan and if the duo leave, then Davies could be brought in.
