Newcastle United are interested in signing Ollie Watkins this summer, and the Chronicle has suggested that Brentford are willing to discuss a move with the Magpies.
Steve Bruce certainly needs to strengthen his striker ranks this summer. Jonjo Shelvey ended last season as the Magpies’ top goalscorer, with just six strikes to his name in the Premier League.
And the Chronicle has suggested that Newcastle have joined the race to land Watkins from the Bees.
The 24-year-old scored 26 goals in all competitions for Thomas Frank’s men. In fact, he was only beaten to the Championship’s Golden Boot by former Newcastle star Aleksandar Mitrovic.
The Chronicle notes that Brentford will want a Championship record fee for Watkins. But it is suggested that they are willing to discuss terms with Newcastle.
TBR View: Watkins an ideal target if Bruce is working with modest budget
The Sun reported earlier this week that Bruce is set to be given just £30 million to spend this summer. So it is going to be extremely difficult for the Newcastle boss to make significant improvements to his squad.
Watkins could therefore, be a fantastic addition to his ranks. He has shown that he is outstanding when playing through the middle.
But he has also previously shown that he is excellent in a wider role.
He may lack top flight experience. But like many Brentford players, it appears that he will be playing in the Premier League sooner or later.
And it would arguably be a fantastic move for Newcastle should they manage to lure Watkins to St James’ Park during this window.
