The Times have claimed that Newcastle United are rivalling ambitious German Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach and Italian giants AS Roma for Manchester United playmaker Jesse Lingard.
Lingard, 27, has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Old Trafford. United are seemingly unwilling to extend the £100k-a-week star’s current deal and it means that they will have to sell this summer – if they want a fee.
The 24-time England international has clocked up 205 appearances for Manchester United, having a hand in 52 goals. The former Brighton, Derby, Leicester and Birmingham loanee has a ratio of a goal or assist every four games.
The report claims Newcastle, Roma and Gladbach are keen. Lingard is hoping his form since the restart will attract bids for his services, but he will wait to make a decision on his future until the Europa League is decided.
TBR’s view – Lingard criticised, but he would be ideal for The Toon
Yes he has been criticised, with personal reasons put down to some indifferent form of late. But it must be remembered that Lingard is a proven Premier League performer – in a number of different positions.
Either flank, in the 10 role or even playing slightly deeper in central midfield, Lingard has the quality to shine at Newcastle. He could bring the best out of Miguel Almiron, by combining with the Paraguayan in attacking midfield.
